In the Long Run

At the end of May I am planning to run in my first half marathon. I've got plenty of time to get ready for it and I think that may be part of the problem I have had with getting motivated and actually start some serious training. I have too much time to get ready. If I were on a tighter schedule I would seriously be freaking out.

I have been talking this half marathon up for some time now. I even told my chiropractor and physical therapist that one reason I couldn't do their detox cleanse was because I needed the calories for my training - the training I sort of haven't started yet.

Typically I am not a procrastinator and I take pride in this fact. Something comes in that has to be taken care of and I do it right then and there. There is something about upping my miles and running consistently that I just haven't been able to get motivated for and it is really beginning to drive me nuts. I guess the fact that I'm bothered by this is a good sign that I'm not completely lost.

Admittedly, the weather hasn't helped. I am not a winter person at all; I need sun and warmth to thrive. For example, today's temperature when I got to the train station this morning the temperatures was 14 degrees, with wind chill it was four. I'm sorry but I do have my limits to my outdoor running. I could totally run in 100 degree weather and wouldn't even think twice about it.

The treadmill is ok, but after three miles I'm done. I once read about a woman who trained for a full marathon on her treadmill. That's 26.2 miles in case you need to see the actual number. I recall that she lived in Minnesota so running outdoors was out of the question for her. But still, how do you do your long runs on a treadmill and not loose any interest?

I have my running buddies, the same ones who started this running thing with me back in April, but their motivation has been on the same level as mine. How does a group of un-motivated people motivate each other to do something? We've been talking about signing up for a 15k (9.3 miles) race in March. That would be the longest distance any of us has run. Theory and common sense suggests that one would actually have to train for that a bit by adding miles to our runs and well, actually running. We haven't. We also haven't registered yet because it does still seem like a daunting task.

But this is going to change and this weekend is the no excuses weekend. I swear! Really I do!

Tomorrow I'm getting in a good four mile run then on Sunday Ed and I are hitting Central Park to run the six mile loop. It's going to be in the 50s on Sunday and really that is all I have been asking for - good weather and good company.

I just have to figure out how I am going to get the mileage in during the week. Sigh.

Bouncing Boobs

Since I took up running I have become an expert at the phenomenon of
bouncing boobs.

I have seen plenty of women running in regular bras and not so great
sports bras. I wonder how they are not experiencing any pain. It has
to hurt.

My biggest and continuing running expense is sports bras. I admit that
I'm not that huge but man as soon as a sports bra looses it's
tightness I can feel it. Those first 100 yards are so painful and
almost always force me to think about turning back. But I always
continue on because I usually force myself to think about something
else and the pain subsides a bit.

How did cavewomen deal with this? Did they have sports bras that we
didn't know about? Or maybe they were too concerned about running away
from the wholly mamouth or dinosaur that they couldn't think about the
pain.

All I know is that I hate it when my boobs bounce and I want to find a
good sports bra that will last a really long time.

Will it Ever be Spring Again?

It is snowing again. This winter is turning into one of the NY metro areas typical winters where it is actually cold and snows on a regular basis. The past couple of winters have been mild and I became spoiled.

For the past two weeks I have been yearning for the snow to completely melt. I was tricked into thinking that this was going to happen yesterday, then the weather reports were confirmed. More snow.

I have never been a fan of winter. I think this happens when you grow up in a desert. It hardly snowed, the temperatures rarely went below 30 degrees, and lasted about two months. It is always at this time of year that I crave the sun most.

Right now I am having visions of going to Miami Beach and staying in one of those little hotels on Collins Avenue. I already have my days planned out. Sleep in until the sunlight wakes me up. Go for a run on Collins Avenue, I've got my route planned out already. Hit the beach or maybe just lay poolside and read a good book. Evenings, eat and drink well.

That's the plan and what will keep me going until spring actually arrives and I can be hopeful that it will stop snowing eventually.

Ice Ice Baby

It hit the mid-40s yesterday in the NY metro area. What a welcome relief, especially for those of us suffering from cabin fever. For the past couple of weeks we have been hit with small snow storm after small snow storm. Every time it seems like things are finally going to thaw and melt away more snow falls.

Not wanting to waste the great weather I hit the street to get in a tempo run. "Not so fast!" the ground yelled back at me. Every few feet there were giant patches of ice. This forced me to have to slow down, walk, or wait until traffic cleared so that I could run around it. I could not get into any sort of rhythm at all and it became obvious that I was not going to get that tempo run in.

But, frustrations aside, I was so happy to be outdoors again without freezing to death. It was great to feel the sun on my skin and breathe in the fresh air. I felt healthy and alive. The best I've felt in a couple of weeks.

The forecast for tonight, more snow.
