A Runner's Life

Last Sunday was my ninth race of in 2008. I think I can safely say that I am a real runner. Further proof of this is the running injury that I have developed. It's called the it band. Official it is called the iliotibial band and is a thick tendon-like portion of another muscle called the tensor fasciae latae. This band passes down the outside of the thigh and inserts just below the knee. That, my friends, is biology lesson for the day. My pain starts at the hip and goes about half way down the thigh, which is good because when it gets to the knee you're out of commission for weeks. Right now, I'm only out for a week with rest and certain stretches and exercises.

This type of injury develops over time and I think I made it worse but not running enough to prepare for some of my longer races. I'm telling you I don't think its a good idea not to run for a week and a half before you do a 10k. Especially when that 10k is going to on a cold day and there are lots of hills involved namely the Harlem Hill in Central Park. The injury was further exacerbated by feeling bad about not running during the week and hitting the treadmill hard and fast. Hence the pain I experience when I now walk a block or two. Not good.

My last race, the 10k, went ok aside from the pain I felt and ignored. Hey, it wasn't shooting sharp pain, just something dull. I felt out of sorts the entire time. I forgot my iPod Nano which has my Nike plus system in it. I had to use my big iPod as the backup. Not too bad but not the same. I also left my running beanie hat at home. This was bigger deal for two reasons. 1. It has built in headphones and a pocket for the Nano. 2. Its made for running. This meant that I had to wear my regular knit cap that must have weighed a ton after the race from all the sweat. (Note: that is the cap I am wearing in the photo.)

I just felt slow and sluggish through out the entire race, I so did not have my mojo. Then there was the woman I kept pace with for most of the race. She had a purse. Yes, a purse. Not just a small little purse but a big ass over the shoulder you could fit three pygmy tribes in it. Plus it had all these pastel swirly color designs on it. Bitch beat me at the finish.

Given all that. I still had a personal record in the 10k which gave me plenty of energy and encouragement to work hard until the injury.

This sucks.

I've Been Cheating

I owe my little blog a big apology. I've been cheating on it -- with a life.

There has been a lot of traveling lately, some business, some pleasure. I've been more social by spending time with my friends and then there's Facebook. I have become addicted to that and for that blog, I apologize. I may need an intervention.

I'm still running when its not dark. It's dark most of the time these days, which means I run on weekends and that sucks. I need to get my ass back to the gym during lunch or right after work. The treadmill is better than nothing. I say this because in May I am going to run in my first half marathon. If I say this often enough and tell more people about it, I will actually have to train for it and actually run it.

Speaking of which, I am running in a 10k tomorrow morning in Central Park. It's supposed to snow tonight and into tomorrow morning. Maybe about an inch in accumulation. Not much snow but just enough to say that I'm crazy. There will be more of these winter races that I am going to do, more craziness on my part but it will pay off. It has to.
