Thanksgiving Diet? Last week I started the diet from the book on the right. I'm a big fan of the authors simply because the diet doesn't contain any gimmicks. For example you won't be seeing a food products coming out under the YOU brand. I thought I was a bit crazy for starting last week since Thanksgiving fell right smack dab in the middle. But I was considering it to be my practice/transition week not only because of Thanksgiving but because it would take some time to get all the food and supplements I needed. I did let myself enjoy that major holiday with two servings of everything, but I did make my pumpkin pie with splenda. Yes, the pies taste fine, which allows me to have a slice for dessert everyday. Hey, there is nothing wrong with some smart modifications. When I started I thought I would cut down my coke intake to one a day but I haven't had one since Monday. I haven’t gone through any withdrawal because I have added Crystal Light iced tea to the mix. My co-workers have been happy about the caffeine bit. The one easy thing about this diet was incorporating the exercise. Since the summer I have been walking to the train station every morning, which is 1.1 miles. When I have had the chance I have added a couple more miles. This practice/transition week has paid off; I have already lost five pounds. I'm sure I could have lost at least another pound without Thanksgiving, but hey I'm being realistic. The book comes with some really great recipes and when I bought the book I also got the companion workout DVD for half price. But I haven't even done one of the workouts yet. I'm almost done with getting all of my food supplies and do plan on doing one of the workouts today. Week two holds a lot of promise. // posted by stacey on 1:47:00 PM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, November 21, 2006 Cold It is never a good thing when you can see your breath on the train. // posted by stacey on 7:27:00 AM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday, November 10, 2006 What does one do after being an usher for honors? I have to be honest and say that it went better than I thought and much quicker. Today we had our 07 Orientation Workshop. I mostly sat back and watched as the attendees took in all the changes for 07. It never cease to be amazed that organizers from such forward and advancing technologies like MEMS and Nanotechnology have a hard time changing. Nhora couldn't wait to get out of town and for all of her efforts to do just that she missed her flight and is going to try and get on a flight later this evening but I won't be surprised if I see her in the hotel tonight. Speaking of tonight, this is the fun part of the evening, the Congress 06 appreciation dinner. It has turned into an event where we all get sit back and have some drinks. A good time for all. Rich is expected to be there since he has already told Jacinta to cover one of his divisional dinners to attend. Nothing like having one's priorities in line. I've got to start packing for my flight tomorrow since it is an early-ish one and I just don't want to do when I get back after all that wine I will be having. later gators. // posted by stacey on 5:00:00 PM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, November 07, 2006 Ghia Me a Break We have this one volunteer who is really pushing to have her format for the final program used for all of our conferences, especially for Congress next year. I don't know how many times we have told her that this won't happen because all of our conferences have to use the same format and using her style for a conference as large as Congress just won't be realistic. This does not phase her at all. Every chance she gets she mentions how she wants us to use her style. Three times this conference I have already heard her mention this. Today Noha called me up to say that my new boss, Nhora, and Rich both stopped Noha to mention that Urmila was looking for her to talk about the final program. She just won't stop. // posted by stacey on 4:01:00 PM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shedd Aquarium I just got back from the aquarium here and had a blast. I checked out the new baby beluga whale and got to see her nurse her mother which was pretty cool. I hung out with some penguins and then some lizards and a bunch of fish. Check out the little slide show. I think I may have a couple of entries for the next photo contest. // posted by stacey on 3:54:00 PM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not much happening so far I am in my new room! It is so much nicer and I actually have a very nice view of the park, the Field Museum, Aquarium and Soldier Field. The reason the hotel was sold out on the first night was because the Chicago Bears were staying in the hotel, not just their fans. The next morning they had a huge breakfast buffet with rows and rows of food that included amazing amounts of spaghetti and meatballs. Perhaps my bad karma is the reason they lost. I ended up missing one of my committee meetings because when the agenda was sent out it did not mention that the time had been changed. About half of the committee missed the meeting as well as non-Meetings Dept. staff. This sucks just for the fact that I was all over the agenda. It hasn't been a very eventful Congress so far. This is actually a good thing. Fewer people have complained about the program, but it still sucks and lacks design originality. I did find out at the staff dinner the other night that Maureen is quitting but will stay on part-time, at JC's request. Nhora it seems is now best friends with MGS and, even worse, is listening to her ideas for re-designing the pubs pages on asme.org. I'm not even going to get started on that one. Today I have the entire day free until the evening when I have to serve as an usher for the Honors Assembly. The plan is to head over to the Aquarium which has a new baby beluga whale. I will take pictures and post. later, my breakfast is here. // posted by stacey on 9:40:00 AM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunday, November 05, 2006 Room Still in the cancer room. // posted by stacey on 2:38:00 PM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Temperature ![]() Temperature Originally uploaded by scoopsy. Temperature dials OK, the room got a bit worse last night. Let's begin with the archaic temperature dials that you see above. The setting on the dial on the left is for speed, that is set to high. The dial on the right is for the temperature which set on coolest. At those settings I should be freezing my ass off. Instead, I had to wear shorts in the room last night and sleep on top of sheets because it was so warm in the room. My guess is that the filter for the cooling system hasn't been changed in a while. When I did try to go to sleep I couldn't because all of the bed linens smelled of (drum roll please) cigarette smoke. I had to get my perfume, CK One if you are wondering, and spray everything just to make it a bit more bearable. It is 9:45 am here and I'll be calling the front desk at that time to find out when I can move into my non-smoking room. Oh and how could I forget -- the TV. This worked fine except I couldn't find anything to watch. I have simple requirements. I need to have at least TNT and Lifetime. This normally guarantees that if there is nothing else on one can always find an episode of Law & Order or the Golden Girls. I caught the tail end of L&O: Criminal Intent then eventually found the tail end of a CSI: Miami episode. No original L&O running back-to-back episodes and no GG. Things do have to get better, right? // posted by stacey on 10:37:00 AM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday, November 04, 2006 This Place Sucks Already!!!! The flight here wasn't bad at all, in fact we got in early. MGS was two rows in front of me and of course, saw me as I was boarding. Amy Geffen was also on the flight so I left MGS to her. The hotel sucks ass! I made my reservation for a king non-smoking room but they are sold out of non-smoking rooms for the night. So I am sitting here in a smaller than my living room double smoking room. I had them come spray the room but it still smells like smoke and my allergies are acting up. The stopper in the bathroom sink is broken and I can't fit my suitcase in the closet. I will take pictures. All I have to say is that if Kim or Mary were still here this would never have had happened. They would have made sure that I was in a better room. Plus there are all these people staying here for the Chicago Bears game tomorrow. They are all wearing multiple items of clothing that say Chicago Bears on them and instead of luggage training behind them they are wheeling ice coolers. I'll try to get pictures of that. // posted by stacey on 10:21:00 PM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Horrors Yikes, mgs is on my flight! Evasive maneuvers will have to be used to secure a seat in the waiting area without detection. // posted by stacey on 5:06:00 PM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Staff Dinner Every year the pubs staff goes out to dinner during Congress. I'm not sure how many of us actually look forward to the event but my guess is that two of them do -- pvd and mgs. Of course, there is always some sort of issue. Just scroll down on this page to refresh your memories about last year's dinner. As usual it always has something to do with the choice of restaurant and mgs not liking it. Here's yesterday's email thread. JF: Considering last year's CONTROVERSY over this topic, I am somewhat reluctant to undertake this task. However... saying no to the boss is like refusing Mr. Soprano himself. Unless I hear differently from you guys, I will make reservations for 9 people at 7 p.m. on Sunday. (Note: The suggestion was a Mexican restaurant) Me: Mexican sounds great to me but 7:30 will better since I have meeting that ends right at 7:00. JF: 7:30 it is. I guess we'll go Mexican. MGS: No, wait! I really prefer not Mexican! But I don't have anything else to suggest. How about a steakhouse or an Italian place??? (Yes, she actually underlined the word not in the email.) After another hour mgs sent a list of restaurants from yahoo. We are going to a Greek restaurant because that is what mgs really wanted. Not that I have a problem with it but just once I would like a non-issue dinner. // posted by stacey on 10:34:00 AM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday, November 03, 2006 Get Away Day Congress is just about to get underway and I have spent most of this week finalizing the Planning Guide. I literally just got through making the copies to have it shipped to the hotel. The delay was partly my fault because last week Super Scout was down for a bit and well when you have the opportunity to play Text Twist for two days straight you take complete advantage. Phil and I both got our hair cut for Congress. While I look all cool and funky he looks more nerdy, especially when he buttons his shirt all the way to the top and doesn't wear a tie. Looks like I'm also going to luck out big time with the weather -- high 50's the entire time I will be there. This means I can actually escape from the hotel during my downtime. ![]() More Chicago posts later. // posted by stacey on 11:41:00 AM // | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Planning guide ![]() Planning guide Originally uploaded by scoopsy.
