Texas Wild Fires

After September 11 and hurricane Katrina there were some fundamentalist Christians, like Pat Robertson, who blamed these events on all the gay people, pro-choice liberals and the like.

Anyway, let's move to current events and the wild fires in Texas and Oklahoma. I was watching the news last night and they interviewed this guy from Texas who said that they were God-fearing Christians who are hard working. He couldn't understand why this was happening to them. Perhaps its because many Christian churches decided to close on Christmas day, a Sunday of all days. That surely must have pissed God off.

There's a great article on the Huffington Post about assigning blame to this.

Bush is apparently keeping a close eye on the fires from his ranch in Crawford, yeah he's on vacation again. Anyway, if the fires hit his ranch do you think he will apply to FEMA for some help?

Two Day Work Weeks Suck

You would think that only having to come in to work for two days would be great. Well, yes it is but it also has its negatives.

First, let's list the positives.

  1. You only have to come in to work for two days.

  2. No one is here because the two days are sandwiched between holidays.

  3. You might be able to sneak out early if the timing is right.

  4. It's quiet.

Now for the negatives.

  1. You have to come in to work for two days.

  2. The two days are sandwiched in between holidays when you are used to sleeping late again.

  3. You might not be able to sneak out early.

  4. No one is here.

  5. All of your websites that you would use to keep busy are Super Scouted.

  6. It's too quiet!

Merry Christmas

Christmas officially started last night at 8:00pm when TBS aired the first showing of the 24 hours of A Christmas Story. Well technically it started earlier with the Christmas Eve dinner with mom. The dinner ends up being much simpler than Thanksgiving -- there are no chestnuts and brussel sprout dishes in sight. It was a simple salad with tamales. Yes, you read that right. Ever since my uncle stopped coming over for Christmas Eve we've gone back to a more traditional western x-mas. Since this is usually the one time of year I get my tamales, I am very satisfied.

Now to the loot!

Mom scored big with a Land's End Christmas. She got hats, gloves, scarves and warm fleece things. She also got some iPod accessories and season two of Miami Vice.

I did incredibly well myself. My brother scored mucho amounts of points with ESQ watch, a very pleasant surprise. I also received my usual Origins and Elizabeth Arden goods, some iTunes gift cards and a Sam Goody gift card. Mom also scored some major points this year with two surprise gifts that I had apparently hinted at but can't remember ever doing so. I also can't remember what I had for lunch last week so this is no great surprise. First off was the Digital Sound Bag from Red Envelope. It even fits my iBook so I'm all set with a nice light bag and can play my tunes at work. To follow that up she got me the Heatwave microfleece blanket from Land's End. This is an especially nice gift since I tend to get cold very easily.

The cats and dog also did well for themselves. Julie got a new collar and leash from, yeah Land's End. I also hooked her up with a new fleece jacket with her name embroidered on it. The cats each got a squishy cat nip mouse. It was great to see the hyper activity for about 10 minutes and watch them all pass out from the cat nip high. The boys also got a special rug thing that helps keep them warm. That seems to be a big hit as the cold cat is stretched out on it. They also got the Cheese Wedge of Furry Mice.

Everyone did well this Christmas and now its time to watch FoodTV and take a nap.

Transit Strike - Day Three

Well the strike is officially over so to speak. The union leaders voted to return to work without a contract. I decided to stay home today since my work load is extremely light and well it is the holidays and we have Friday off as well.

Aside from the strike ending, the highlight of the day had to be watching Godzilla vs. Hedorah or Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster on the SciFi channel. It had been awhile since I have seen this so it was quite entertaining. The dubbing of the voices and the zipper on the front of Godzilla's suit are just classic. But I think the best was when all the Japanese people were in the field and beach blanket bingo suddenly broke out. I never realized that electric guitars and keyboards worked in the middle of a field.

Transit Strike - Day 2

I am one of the lucky ones. I take Metro-North and my line, the New Haven, line is not making extra stops in the morning. Going home this may be a different story as I will have to contend with people in Grand Central.

Chrissy is working from home today and I think I'll do that tomorrow only so that I don't have to deal with people right before the holiday. CBC rode her bike in from Brooklyn, she is ultra rugged. One of these days I'll have to get a picture of her in her cycling outfit.

Starfucks

One of the early casualties of the NYC transit strike is Starfucks. Oops, I mean Starbucks. I don't want to get those over caffeinated and over charged people upset at me. The prize tenant of our building is Starbucks and unfortunately the people who can open the safe did not make it in, even though a few employees did.

The Starbucks is dark today. So, so sad but entertaining. It gives me incredible joy to watch people walk up to the dark store, read the sign that says Starbucks is closed and then they still try to open the door. At first it is a gentle tug but then these caffeinated addicts really start pulling on the door four or five times and then the little brain synapses fire up. The synapses sends a message like this, "No lights, sign on door says closed, door is locked. Starbucks is closed." Then the message actually registers somewhere in the brain and the person usually sighs and in some cases shrieks. The shrieks are the most entertaining bit, that and the sulking back to where they came from.

Transit Strike - Day 1

Today is the first day of the real transit strike in NYC. Yesterday was the unofficial first day of the strike when a couple of private bus lines that will be incorporated into the MTA went out. Today they're all on strike.

Since I take Metro-North from Westchester county everything was ok, but there is a caveat to this. If a picket line shows up outside Grand Central Station, Metro-North will not cross it. Unfortunately for me, this did not happen.

I am getting tired of all the news vans parked outside of Grand Central. The WCBS news van made me choke on exhaust fumes yesterday and now today we had to walk around some news girl standing on a box so that she could do a live broadcast. Otherwise, the city was pretty empty this morning by GCT. Walking along Park Avenue I did notice a lot more people walking and some even breaking in their new sneakers.

Fleece

It is currently 19 degrees outside and according to weather.com it feels like seven degrees. I made it to work today because of one amazing fabric -- fleece.

I have my fleece hat, scarf, gloves and socks. Yes, socks. I also have my thermal undergarments on and a fleece/wool vets thing but the socks really made the difference this morning. My feet are toasty warm and therefore provided me with tools to get through the cold.

There are some things at work that may need some fleece as well since they are not working at all. For two days I have been trying to update the toolbar on a couple of my websites to no avail. It never fails when I finally have work to do I can't do it. Maybe I should buy the programmers and development server some fleece socks to see if that will get their ass' into gear.

I'm still walking on air after the U2 concert and owe you my review of the show. I'm just trying to gather all my thoughts on the show and keep listening to my playlist that I set up on my ipod of the Hartford set. There really is so much I want to say about the show.

Back Home

Well I'm back home and sitting in my living room, still recovering from the concert but recovering in a good way -- I'll be taking a nap soon. I was glad to see that all of my posts from the mobile phone actually made it on the blog when I sent them. Blogger and I have had issues about for some time, but things seem to be improving.

Later today I will be posting avi clips that I took during the concert. You can sort of see ok but you can hear the songs really great. I was sitting by a door was sort of freaked that someone might catch me recording bits of the concert so the clips aren't that long. The one of Sunday Bloody Sunday is a wee bit shorter that the others cuz I just simply wanted to jump up and down and dance and sing.

I did have an iPod/iTunes incident last night. Usually when I plug my iPod into my iBook it just mounts as an external hard drive, like the way I set it up. But some how that preference got wiped away with the new logic board. Weird because it shouldn't have. Normally iTunes will ask if I want to update the library but alas it did not. By the time I noticed, it overrode everything and left me with the 37 songs on my iBook. So now that I am back home the iPod is being update on the home iMac and getting all 4,000+ songs and photos back on it. At least the 37 songs (a couple of podcasts) got me through the 2.5 hour bus trip back to NYC.

Cherry Coke

Yeah cherry coke! I haven't had this in years and I must say it hits the spot after last night's concert and waiting for the bus back to NYC.

Tonight is the long awaited U2 concert. I'm sort of getting excited but am still tired from the ride up. I'll hopefully have pictures later.

boogle

On Saturday my mother and I went to go see Rent. I'm a Rent-head and loved it. It is different in some ways but every time I hear the songs I fall in love all over again.

Afterwards, we went to the Stop and Shop which is located in the same building/facility. One of the things I needed to get was cash and I had forgotten to stop at the ATM to get this. No worry, I could use my debit card to get my groceries. One of the new fangled things this Stop and Shop has is self-checkout for the 12 items or less express check-out. This is great except that the old people of Port Chester can't use this and we couldn't figure out how to scan my fresh rolls, not even the Stop and Shop girl could figure it out. We ended up getting them for free.

While I was using my debit card my mother said you should get some cash back. I didn't. Then on Sunday evening I realized that I needed some cash to get to work and asked my mother is she had some singles. Then she responded with this.

"Let me get on that boogle, boggle thing."

"It's the blog."

"Well let me get on that blog of yours and tell everyone that I told you to get cash back but you ignored me and now need money. See you should listen to your mother."

So for the record, yes, mom I should have listened.

Firsts and One Second

This is a day of firsts. Today was our first snowfall and obviously the first time I had to take out the snow shovel for the year. I got to use my new winter boots from Land's End. They are the ultimate in goodness. They are fleece lined and very comfortable. The traction is pretty good. Normally when I shovel the driveway I end up slipping a bit, not falling, but slipping enough where it is obvious I slipped. There was no slippage today.

Today is the second time that I will be using my new crock pot. But it is the first time that I am using those new crock pot liners made the Reynold's wrap folks. Today is also the first time that I am using one of those crock pot meals in a bag. The calories aren't too bad considering that it is packaged food but for today I am looking for ease. Look when your blood pressure is 120/80 and your cholesterol is 161 you can do this every once in a while.
