Good Night, and Good Luck.

Last night the new Loews multiplex opened up here in Port Chester. This is basically my dream come true. It has 14 screens and surround sound and is within walking distance from my home. Pure heaven!

This morning I went to go see Good Night, and Good Luck. with George Clooney and David Srathairn. I am not a George Clooney and avoid most of his movies like the plague. You see Clooney has this thing he does with his head that really annoys the crap out of me. Its the Clooney tilt your head to the side while making a point method of acting. Turn on some old epidodes of ER and you'll see what I mean. Well thankfully, even though this a Clooney driven film (He directed, co-wrote the screenplay and co-produced it.), its not all Clooney all the time. Don't worry you do get to see his head tilt near the end.

I highly recommend this movie. David Strathairn does a bang on Edward R. Murrow and to see some of the behind the scenes moments that went into his showdown with McCarthy is interesting. I could have used more of these behind the scenes moments but again I highly recommend this for the tremendous acting, all around.

Can do it almost any time and place
Something to do with your hands
Feels great
Healthier than interacting w/ someone else
Minimal effort - great for lazy guys
If you want something done right...

I think my favorite is healthier than interacting with someone else. Not healthier than unprotected sex but interacting. Maybe he meant intercourse? I don't know. But I would like the person asking the question to learn how to spell their.

Steel Plates

Well Verizon has sort of moved on from the 24/7 schedule by my house. What is left though is just as annoying -- steel plates.

Down the street on the busy main road where they were working there are now steel plates, which makes me think that they will be back for more round the clock disruption. So for the entire night all I hear is thump-thump as cars drive over them. Sometimes a little slower and most of the time much faster.

The progress in front of my house is not much better. Instead of working 24/7, I guess they realized that it is a residential neighborhood (wonder if the houses might have tipped them off), and working through the night might not be a good idea after all. What is worse is that the work is sporadic at best. They will showed up one day with a giant back hoe and dug. Then they put giant steel plates, you guess it, directly in front of my house. They left a large coil of cable in my neighbors yard across the street and large pipe things in my other neighbors yard.

While I was getting used to the thump-thump down the street and get a THUMP-THUMP in front of my house. Even though it doesn't happen as often, its loud enough that it really wakes a person up and the next 30 minutes or so are spent trying to get back to sleep so in time for the next THUMP-THUMP.

I've never liked Verizon to begin with but now whenever I see the Verizon truck I give them my most evil death ray.

Heat

I'm trying to hold out on turning on the heat until November. I'm not sure if the animals agree with me, but since I'm the one with the money they don't have choice in the matter. Julie can wear her sweater and the cats can continue sitting right in fron tof the space heater.

The one really good thing about this is that it has kept Simon from pacing the house and screaming his head off. This is the most stationary and silent he has been in months.

Can You Hear Me Now?

Since last Monday a group of Verizon trucks have been working 24/7 down the street from my house. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have bright lights and loud generators also working 24/7. Needless to say this has adversely affected my sleep. So much so that not even Tylenol PM can give me decent night's sleep. The constant hum can be heard through out my entire house so I can't even go into another room to sleep.

It is finally beginning to catch up with me. I now have a near constant headache from the lack of sleep, my eyes feel very heavy and I suspect the grumpiness will soon be in full effect.

What I want to know from Verizon is, WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING ON MY STREET AND WHEN WILL YOU FUCKING FINISH!?!

Bravo for Apple

Once again Apple has proven how much they rule.

For a couple of years now I have been telling everyone that a video iPod was around the corner. Well it is finally here and boy the offerings have surpassed all of my expectations.

Even though I won't be buying one soon (I just bought my 60gb iPod Photo last summer) I can still enjoy the videos. In particular, Night Stalker, the new series on ABC. You see it comes on at the same time as CSI and since I have yet to get TiVo I have had to choose, and well CSI won. Now I can download the episodes and happily watch them and look all cool and shit. The videos can be played through iTunes or through QuickTime. I choose QuickTime because I can expand the viewing screen, oh and it doesn't pixelate when you do this.

For those of you who missed episodes of Lost or Desperate Housewives, this is for you. All you need is a computer, iTunes and QuickTime.

Enjoy!

The Good Thing About Rain

It has been raining since last Thursday or Friday. I really can't remember since it has been almost non-stop since. We did need the rain and that is obvious because water has not seeped into my basement yet. That may happen tomorrow.

Leave it to Janice Huff on WNBC to provide the "on the bright side" moment. If this were snow and not rain we would be shoveling out 5 feet of snow. 5 FEET OF SNOW!!!! That is my worst night mare.

Crash - The Comments

ZAIDA I AM TELLING YOU NOW IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE DO NOT READ THIS!

I'm a bit delayed in writing about the movie Crash. Part of it is because of the way it has left me feeling. To put it simply, it just stays with you for a long time. It is incredible film-making and incredible acting. There are a few scenes where you literally hold your breath. I can't remember the last time that happened when I saw a movie.

The meatier discussion of racism is an interesting one for me personally. Being white, I don't go into panic mode as Sandra Bullock's character does when she sees two black men walking toward her. My comfort decreases when I'm surrounded by all white people.

Examples:
1. Last summer I went to La Jolla on a business trip. My boss and I went out to dinner and while we were waiting for our cab to take us back to the hotel we both looked at each other and said, "They're all white." For me it is very weird to be in places where there are only white people. It feels wrong.

2. White men in suits. They must all be uptight conservative republicans. Hate them.

3. White people who are demonstrative in the patriotism. To me this means they voted for Bush and are ultra-conservative. Hate them.

Yup, this means I'm one of those lezzie liberals!

But, I cannot state this enough, if you have not seen the movie you really need to.

Trekkie or Trekker?

About a month ago I was having a conversation with Rick and Chrissy and somehow Star Trek conventions came up. It was then that I volunteered (at much risk to myself) that I used to go to them. I then continued to explain that not only did I go to them but that I even belonged to a crew, The Enterprise of course, and even had the uniform, communicator and phaser. My rank was leftenant because we were a British ship and I was in charge of weapons.

For two years of my college life I spent quite a few weekends in Baltimore where these conventions or cons took place. I even got Majel Barrett's autograph at one. If you don’t know who she is then you need to go imdb.com because true fans know who she is.

My friends and I always fiercely defended ourselves by saying that we were not trekkies but trekkers. The line is a bit blurry, but it boils down to trekkies are more geekish and trekkers aren't. Although, I do question the one member of our crew who changed her name to a Vulcan one and some really good Vulcan ears made to fit hers and no one else's.

Hey, like I said. The line between the two is very blurry.

Change is Good...I Think

Well, as you I'm sure you have noticed the look of the blog has changed. It took a little longer than expected but I'm happy with it so far. I still have some tweaking to do like adding the about and contact links. Those will involve creating a template for all the other pages on the site and getting things just right.

One of the biggest additions will be my new podcast. I'm really jonesing about this. I love to listen to music and I'm always listening to artists that don't get radio play because they're not dumb and blonde. Every week, I'll have a new podcast featuring some of my favorite artists and some of my thoughts. There will also be blog devoted especially to the podcast where you will be able to find more detailed information about the music and where to get it.

I may also be adding some information on buying some caps and t-shirts because hey, I will be spending a lot of time on this and would like to see something in return. So do me a favor click on some google ad links and buy a book or dvd.

Is it 3:45 yet?

The next 35 minutes will be the longest in the history of the world. Of course this is only because I will be leaving at 3:45, not for any scientific reason. Although I'm sure if I googled it I'm sure I could find something about how science and physics effect the passing of time especially when one is bored.

But here I sit writing this blog post instead of actually looking for that scientific research about time. Frankly that would take way too much energy that I just don't have the capacity for right now. I'm sure that one of these days I will and you can bet I'll post that!

Interesting Note: While spell checking this in Blogger, the words googled and blog were not found in the dictionary. You would think that since this is a blog and that it is owned by google these would be there.

Movie Day Put on Hold

Well, it ended up not being movie day at all. During the opening credits, I believe I got as far as Matt Dillon, CBC called into a meeting her cube. The end result was that I volunteered, yes I really did volunteer, to help out the Meetings Dept. with some things for the final program for Congress. Basically I launched QuarkXPress to do some real work in it for the first time since I left the Meetings Dept.

It did feel like old times and I was able to pick up the speed of the usual clean up routine. Then the pain in my shoulder started up again and I remembered why I hated doing the program in the first place. It is a pain that I simply don't have to with anymore. Now its just the pain in the ass I get from the jerks in K&C.

I was finally able to start watching Crash at about 3:00pm and continue on the train ride home. I have about another 30-40 minutes. But so far my reaction is simply this -- GO BUY THIS DVD NOW. The film making, acting and script are fucking fabulous.

Crash

Today is movie day. It has been that kind of week, well sort of. It has been an every other day kind of week. One day is nothing but non-stop work and the other a perfect day to read a book or in today's case, watch a movie.

My selection for today is the movie Crash. I have had it ever since it came out on dvd but just haven't gotten around to watching it. After watching the cast on Oprah I decided that now would be a good time.

I'll give you my review later.

The Numero Uno Best Seat Ever

It is Monday morning and I am dreading work, a whole week off and as soon as I get to work I know that I will be bombarded with unreasonable amounts of email and voice mail. The one thing that I am hoping for is a peaceful commute and for that to happen I must have my seat.

This just isn’t any kind of seat but is the numero uno best seat ever. If you commute into the city every day like I do, you know exactly what I am talking about. It is the seat that makes you most happy, the one with the best view, the one that won’t make you feel like a sardine and most important the seat that you can get on just about every day.

My seat in particular is the one directly across from the conductor’s cab. It is a special seat that folds up so that the conductor can use the control panel and open the doors. What makes the seat extra special is that there is no armrest and it just happens to comfy. This means that even if someone is sitting in it next to the window you will not be cramped up in an itty-bitty space, you can still sit comfortably in the seat and be happy.

If you are lucky like I am you often get to the seat before anyone else and sit on the outside so that if someone at the next stop wants to sit there they have to be by the window and cannot exit the train as quickly. On most days, no one will sit on the inside because they think that they will be pressed up against the window with no escape. They are idiots who do not deserve to sit in the seat – the numero uno best seat.

As the train pulls up into the station I see that there is a bar car behind the one with my seat. This is not a good sign at all. This means that the overflow of people will be in my car. IT MEANS THAT SOMEONE MIGHT BE SITTING IN MY SEAT! This is awful, not on a Monday, please not today.

I make sure that I am the first person to step into the car, to make sure that I am in the best position to get my seat. I pray that if someone is in the seat it is just one person, but to my horror it is the couple. The couple I have grown to despise – the couple from Connecticut. He is tall and always wears a navy pin-stripped suit. She is shorter with long blond hair, perfectly straight I might add. There is just something about them that I don’t like; they just seem to ooze snobbery. As if I’m not good enough to even be sitting in the same car as them.

They both lift up their heads, almost mockingly, as I walk down the aisle. I give them my best evil death ray look and sit in the empty seat directly in front of them. Then the worst possible thing happens, I hear them kissing. KISSING!?! THERE WILL BE NO KISSING IN THE NUMERO UNO BEST SEAT! NOT YOUR BEST SEAT, MY BEST SEAT. DO YOU UNDERSTAND YOU FUCKING MORONS? YOU ARE IN MY SEAT NOT YOUR FUCKING BEDROOM!

Of course I could not get up and actually say that to them so I did the only thing I could, which was to turn up the volume on my iPod and continue to deliver evil thoughts to them. One day they will suffer for what they have done.

It is okay I will get the numero uno best seat tomorrow, I am sure of it. It just has to be mine!

redesign

within the next couple of days you will see some changes on the blog and the overall i am stacey cooper website.

not that anyone has complained but the background will go from busy to white and tied into the look and feel of my entire site. things will be moved around, some featured more prominently and others less so.

i'm hoping that the transition will be seamless, but you know how it goes, things inevitably get fucked up at some point.

all of this pretty much stems from the fact that i want to be a writer again. i want to sit down and write all the time. i remember feeling good when i used to write and i desperately want to have that feeling again. call it reading some really kick ass books and blogs. whatever the inspiration, i'm feeling optimistic about the site and my writing in ways that i haven't felt in a long time. it is now time to put those thoughts of books and short stories that always pop in my head and put them to good use.

more on harriet miers

well during el presidente dick face's speech nominating harriet miers to the supreme court, he snuck something in that is very telling to those conservative supporters of his.

forget the fact that she used to be a democrat and even contributed $1,000 to an al gore campaign, she is a fundamentalist christian's dream come true.

here's the paragraph of note with my added emphasis.

"She led by example. She put in long hours of pro bono work. Harriet Miers has given generously of her time and talent by serving as a leader with more than a dozen community groups and charities, including the Young Women's Christian Association, Childcare Dallas, Goodwill Industries, Exodus Ministries, Meals on Wheels and the Legal Aid Society."

exodus ministries is an organization whose website purports to provide "freedom from homosexuality through the power of jesus christ."

more from their website.

"Exodus is a worldwide interdenominational, Christian organization called to encourage, strengthen, unify and equip Christians to minister the transforming power of the Lord Jesus Christ to those affected by homosexuality."

for this alone, we need to make sure that this woman never gets nominated. please contact your senator today to let them know that you do not support this nomination.

note:the exodus ministries that bus mentions is not the ex-gay group but one that "is a non-denominational Christian organization established to assist ex-offenders and their families become productive members of society by meeting both their spiritual and physical needs." their website is located at http://www.exodusministriesinc.com what we do need to do is find out as much about this nominee as possible.
