another flex day

i love my flex days. it gives that extra day to sleep a little late so that i don't waste most of my saturday. today i got to sleep until 9:00am which was superb. i had to get up and run down to the vet to get princess her anti-biotics for her bad tooth which can't be taken care of surgically because of her diabetes and weight (or lack there of). i also picked up another case of her cat food.

today just also happens to be a major deadline day for congress. not that congress but the international mechanical engineering conference and exposition. today is the day that all reviews must be completed. this is also the first time that i have been out of the office on the day of a major deadline. i must admit that it does make me nervous, but so far i have resisted the urge to check my email.

it's more humid today than it was yesterday but i've got two cats on the chaise and they need me to be on it.

i need to retire

i came to this conclusion on saturday after spending all afternoon on the new double chaise lounge. the weather was perfect and it was nice and peaceful outside. think about it, if you have some sort of steady income that allows you to maintain a decent lifestyle that you are accustomed to why work? that's my problem, i don't have sugar mommy, rich girlfriend, rich relatives or any lotto winnings. times being what they are winning the lotto are my best chances at early retirement.

reasons for wanting to retire:
1. if the only thing i have to deal with is battling the squirrels trying to trying to get the bird food and the can man raiding my recycling bin it's all good.
2. the need to be able to sleep at least until 8 every morning, although 10 would be preferred.
3. not to have to deal with incompetent co-workers.
4. not being blamed for doing something when you didn't by incompetent co-workers. more about that later.

basically i need to win the lotto.

productivity

cynthia is out today, so is chrissy and so is judy. that leaves rick and ava to do the talking. but we are all trying to lay low today so the talking has been at a minimum.

it is extremely quiet. so quiet that i can hear raj going through his filing cabinets.

this morning i typed up a report that i finally found time to do and have cleared other things off my desk. now is just have little things to work on. these will need to be spread out so that i will have something to do this afternoon. this will be a challenge since it isn't even 11 yet.

i do have movies that i may watch. oh and the underwire in my bra is bothering me big time.

cubism II

all tech pubs staff received this email from darch: (btw, according to the staff directory we are no longer technical publishing but publishing administration.)

"Please give me a brief list of what you need for the planning of spacing for the move. List all files, cabinets inside or out of your cubicle, chairs, desks, spacing, etc. "

move? what move? who said we're moving? when are we moving? where are we moving? why are we moving? how are we moving? so many questions and so few answers. at least i covered all the 5 w's and 1 h thing. my journalism professors from back in the day would be so proud.

apparently what we gather is that with the reorg we will be moving. this may happen within eight or nine months. what is needed from us is a basic inventory of what we have in our cubes and then what we might need.

here's my list.

1. L shaped desk with drawers on one side and file drawers on the other.
2. 1 managers chair
3. 1 overhead cabinet
4. 1 fluorescent light to fit under cabinet
5. 1 overhead shelving unit
6. 1 filing cabinet
7. 1 guest chair

oh and lest i forget the not so sturdy cube walls.

what i would like

1. 1 door
2. sturdy cube walls (so that door can be slammed in the face of annoying co-workers)

to be on the safe side i have included a slide show of the current items in my cube. i want to make sure that i get the same crappy shit when we move.

it must suck

there are many times i am happy that i am a human, especially when it comes to the opposable thumb thing. i would be in serious trouble is simon the cat had opposable thumbs because that would mean he would really be able to open the front door and escape. while it would be handy if julie had thumbs and could let herself out at 5:00am when she needs to pee.

but then again not having thumbs and being upright would mean that i could not use toilet paper. case in point. i happened to be using the facilities at the same time the princess the cat was using them. (note to reader: the litter box is located in the bathroom.) when finished i get to use toilet paper and then wash my hands. princess finishes, goes out in the living room and then must lick her ass clean. trust me when i say hers, was not a happy shit.

hail to the four day work week

when we first started summer flex time about four maybe five years ago, we were not allowed to do flex time during the two week period of july 4. the idea was that they didn't want to give us a freebie hour. this changed last year. we were actually allowed to do flex time during that week. at the time we all thought that it was a mistake. this year we were allowed to do it again. the wonderful thing about this is that it worked out that i have had three weeks in a row where i only have to work four days. it fucking rules. next week is gonna suck.

brain freeze

today is the 40th anniversary of the slurpee. if you happen to be near a 7-eleven today stop by because you can get a free sample.

to celebrate, here are some fun slurpee facts provided by yahoo.

consumption - since 1965, more than 6 billion slurpees have been sold. they're now sold in 17 countries. U.S. annual sales alone are $170 million.

the slurpee machine and ingredients - syrup, carbon dioxide and water are mixed under pressure in a freezing chamber.

odd facts - in 1970, slurpee marketing included slurp magazine and a dance step and song called the slurp.

unfortunately, i am not near a 7-eleven so i will got to dunkin donuts and get an orange-mango coolata and pretend i'm having a slurpee.

enjoy the heat!

cubism

i can be a neat freak at times especially when it comes to my work area. everything has a particular place and must remain in that location. when i am finished working on something i immediately put it back in its proper place. now i think i need to be clear that i am not anal nor do i have ocd. but everything has a home, where it likes to reside.

believe me when i tell you that there is a method to my madness. well maybe not originally planned but useful nonetheless. when things has a proper home it makes it easier to tell one someone has been in your cube.

for example, last friday i had my summer flex day. when i came back on tuesday after the long weekend i noticed that my staff phone directory was not in its proper placement. i mentioned this aloud and chrissy mentioned that cynthia borrowed it.

another example. i have this cardboard box on top of my cabinet that i am going to use when i eventually return my nikeid's to nike. again this has a home. last night someone moved it to the other side of the cabinet. in order for someone to reach the box they would have to move my chair and lean over a bunch of things. these were not as disturbed, but i noticed them. why? you guessed it -- everything has a home.

so now i am on the lookout for a person who would be in my cube at night touching my stuff. it's just wrong.

if you see something say something

there is something to be said about the resiliency of my city. that is one of the things that i have always loved about new york city. we're tough and we bounce back. however, some things are hard to bounce back from and just when you think that you have completely recovered you are reminded about what hurt most.

on september 11, 2001 my city was crippled by the act of terrorism. in the hours following the attacks the streets were filled with millions of people trying to get home. by the evening the streets were empty and i mean deserted empty. i had never seen new york city like that before.

tonight as another city i love is recovering from a similar attack on its transit system i was reminded about that night on on September 11 when the streets were empty. you see on a thursday night or almost any night the subways at 34th street, times square and grand central are filled with people, especially during the summer. the trains are crowded and often filled to capacity. but not tonight.

i was amazed after i left the liberty game (even they had a good sized crowd) and got into penn station and it was practically empty. when i ran up onto the platform to try and catch the 2 express it was pulling out of the station and it had very few people on it. while i waited for the next train there wasn't the normal amount of people hovering around on the platform. when the next train arrived it too was empty.

this continued when we got into times square. there was hardly anyone on the platform waiting to board the train. as i made my way to the shuttle and into grand central it was the same – very empty.

the odd thing is that i don't recall this happening when the transit system was attacked in spain, which is why i was initially surprised at the lack of subway riders.

could it be that because today's attacks in London feel closer because it is an English speaking country? that we feel some sort of motherland/colony kinship? is it that spain seems farther away? i don't know.

maybe it has something to do with how our security forces react to such attacks. after the bombs exploded in spain there wasn't that much additional security added on our trains. but today was amazing.

fresh off a plane from singapore, after losing our lympic bid, mayor Bloomberg was joined by governor pataki and other new york cty officials in grand central to announce that security measures would be stepped up and that if you see something you should say something.

by executive order new york state troopers would be back on our commuter rail roads walking up and down the trains, police on horses would be protecting the exterior of the empire state building and police would be riding on the subways.

what good this does i have no idea. if someone is that determined to blow up and train or bus a police officer or state trooper can't stop it. if they could don't you think the police and military in Israel would have figured this out by now? their presence does one thing for many people – it provides a sense of security, an idea that they will be safe.

meanwhile, real terrorists can still get into our country everyday with fake passports and very few of our ports sreen any of the ships and their cargo before they come into port. but this doesn't matter because we don't see this happen up close and personal like the attacks in London.

its all about a false sense of security.

london

over the years london has become one of my favorite cities to visit. there is just something about it that makes me feel right at home. so much so that in 1999 i almost packed my bags and moved there.

the people are incredibly nice and just way cool.

i was terribly saddened by today's events but at the same time comforted knowing that the british way of carrying on would kick in.

one of the things that kept crossing my mind as i read and watched about the bombings was, "i was at the station," or "i was in that neighborhood."

here are some pictures from my visit in 1999. they are a bit grainy since the ones i actually had on me were from one of my old websites. i'll scan in the better ones tomorrow to post. click on the picture to view the slide show.
